The Quranic Questions – 3

The Nature

The definition of Nature has the following six connotations:

  1.  The material world especially that is surrounding humankind and existing independently of human activities.
  2. The natural world as it exists without human beings or civilization.
  3. The elements of the natural world, such as mountains, trees, animals, rivers, forests etc.
  4. Natural scenery
  5. The universe, with all its phenomena
  6. The sum total of the forces at work throughout the universe. (Source:

The Quranic description of nature expounds a fascinating world of enchanting beauty, it has far more expanse than what nature is usually perceived. Just to put it in a nut shell you can say that the Quran presents theories about different forms of nature and the entire universe stands for there practical demonstrations. The demonstration is so colossal that it’s quite difficult for the human intellect to perceive how exactly the wonders of nature are at work. Let us contemplate on one of its aspects.

The phenomenon of rain and greenery has been described precisely in the Quran {Do you not see that Allah sends down water (rain) from the sky, and then the earth becomes green?(22:63)}. The sky, the earth and the atmosphere in between witness to what the Book says and present dazzling scenario of falling rain drops, germinating and sprouting of seeds and there by growing into a mature tree. The practical demonstration is so colossal that one needs to delve with tons of factors to understand how rain comes down from the sky and how a seed grows into a huge tree and bears fruits. To understand about rain, seed and tree, you need to study at least 35 branches of science as listed alphabetically below:

  • Aerology – study of the atmosphere
  • Agrobiology – study of plant nutrition; soil yields
  • Agrology – study of agricultural soils
  • Agronomics – study of productivity of land
  • Anemology – study of winds
  • Biology – study of life
  • Bionomics – study of organisms interacting in their environments
  • Botany – study of plants
  • Carpology – study of fruit
  • Climatology – study of climate
  • Dendrology – study of trees
  • Ecology – study of environment
  • Edaphology – study of soils
  • Geoponics – study of agriculture
  • Horticulture – study of gardening
  • Hydrogeology – study of ground water
  • Hydrography – study of investigating bodies of water
  • Hydrology – study of water resources
  • Hydrometeorology – study of atmospheric moisture
  • Hyetology – science of rainfall
  • Meteorology – study of weather
  • Nephology – study of clouds
  • Oceanography – study of oceans
  • Oceanology – study of oceans
  • Ombrology – study of rain
  • Orchidology – study of orchids
  • Pedology – study of soils
  • Pelology – study of mud
  • Planetology – study of planets
  • Pomology – study of fruit-growing
  • Potamology – study of rivers
  • Selenology – study of the moon
  • Silvics – study of tree’s life
  • Thalassography – science of the sea
  • Tidology – study of tides

Astonishing isn’t it? The Quran profoundly describes different facets of nature at length; it’s extremely difficult to reach to the depth of true understanding of nature. To know the science behind rain and greenery study of tens of branches is required, what about rest of the shades of nature then? Just think.

Questions about the Nature:

The verses mentioned below reveal various shades of nature. A close look at these verses help us categorize the Quranic description of nature in five ways:

  1. Blessings (see, Ar Rad:41, An Noor: 43…. , as mentioned below)
  2. The art of creation (see, Al-Hajj: 63, 65, Ash Shuara: 7…..)
  3. Exotic sceneries (see, An Nahl: 79, An Noor: 41…)
  4. Allah’s Mercy that no untoward incident happens in the universe (Al Hajj: 65, Saba: 9….)
  5. Scientific facts that present an incredibly great scope of research and development (see Ar Rad: 41, Al Furqan: 45, Luqman: 29….)

Now, look at the Quranic questions how beautifully they describe the essence of what exists in the universe:

 أَوَلَمۡ يَرَوۡاْ أَنَّا نَأۡتِى ٱلۡأَرۡضَ نَنقُصُہَا مِنۡ أَطۡرَافِهَا‌ۚ

Do they not see that We are advancing in the land, diminishing it by its borders on all sides?… (Ch 13 – Ar-Rad: 41)

Have you not seen how Allah has subjected to you all that is in the earth, and the vessels that sail in the sea by His command? And it is He Who holds back the heaven that it may not fall on the earth except by His leave? (Ch 22 – Al-Hajj: 65)

Do you not see that all that is in the heavens and the earth, even the birds that go about spreading their wings in flight, extol His glory? (Ch 24 – An-Noor: 41)

Say: Travel through the earth and see how Allah did originate creation…? (Ch 29 – Al-Ankaboot: 20)

Do they not look at the Camels, how they are made? And at the Sky, how it is raised high? And at the Mountains, how they are fixed firm? And at the Earth, how it is spread out? (Ch 88 – Al-Ghashiya: 17-20)

….and the ultimate goal

Actually the human progress seems to be a journey of contemplation and subsequent achievements. The more you contemplate the more you are going to progress. Undoubtedly, the human history is a continuation of such contemplative progress as evident from the utilitarian aspects of the past, that without referring to earlier periods the development of culture and civilization is hard to materialize.

Obviously, the way we progress and achieve, sets the future course for the generation next. So the process of contemplation can be regarded as a benchmark of humanity and the Quran addresses this distinctive attribute by presenting the whole universe…

We will show them Our Signs in the universe, and in their own selves, until it becomes manifest to them that this (the Qur’an) is the truth. (Ch 41- Fussilat: 53)
