Ramadhan Musings 5

– How Kareem is related to you?

During this blessed month, we usually come across the term “Ramadhan Kareem” which means the month of Ramadhan is generous in terms of its goodness and rewards. Even we say Al-Quran Al-Kareem, which indicates that the Book is full of virtues and rewards. In the Arabic language the root (کرم) from which the word ‘Kareem’ has been derived connotes two distinct meanings; one generous, and beneficent and the second, to be highly valued, forbearing, noble and pure. In the Quran, Almighty Allah ascribes Himself with the attribute of Al-Kareem, the most prominent one being:

يَـٰٓأَيُّہَا ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنُ مَا غَرَّكَ بِرَبِّكَ ٱلۡڪَرِيمِ

O man! What has made you careless concerning your Lord, the gracious

Now, the main contention of our discussion is to find out in what ways we can:

  1. Relate ourselves with the Generous One (Kareem)
  2. Be kind and gentle (Kareem) to others

Relationship with the Kareem

Of all the attributes, the positive and the ones that emphasize the benevolent face of the Almighty Allah are more. Al-Kareem is one such. To be worthy of all the generosity and forgiveness of Allah, you need to abide by the following:

  • Establish prayers and spend what has been provided – (see Al-Anfal: 3-4)
  • Ensure continuous change in your persona and help the needy – ( see Al-Anfal: 74)
  • Rejuvenate your faith and perform good deeds – (see Al-Hajj: 50)
  • Select righteous women as life-partners – ( see An-Noor: 26)
  • Regardless of what others do, you should be always grateful (see An-Naml: 40)
  • Cultivate a firm belief that the righteous deeds make you worthy of His generosity (see Saba: 4)
  • Be obedient and have fear in the unseen (see Ya Sin: 11)
  • Spend wealth with pure intention and lend good-load (قرض حسنہ) to Allah (see Al-Hadid: 11& 18).

Relationship of a servant of Kareem with others

Being a beneficiary of the bounties and blessings of the Generous One (Kareem), you need to be generous to others the following way:

  • Rejuvenate your faith in Allah and His Messenger (pbuh)
  • Honor the Muslims
  • Respect and protect the honor and dignity of the Muslims
  • Be a protector of the dignity of humanity
  • Love for others what you love for yourself
  • Help the needy, regardless of what situation you are in
  • Be good to others regardless of their attitudes
  • Be patient if any calamity befalls
  • Develop high moral standards
  • Invite your brethren towards good
  • Put in all your efforts to prevent them from evils and hell fire

Rewards of bi-linear relationship

In Ramadhan, different forms of worship strengthen this bi-linear relationship with the Almighty Allah and His servants. You can term this as prerequisite of Taqwa.

As evident from the above verses, the beneficial aspects for the one who forms such an exemplary relationship are:

  • Forgiveness
  • Abundant sustenance
  • Rich rewards, here and hereafter

The prerequisite of Allah’s excellent attributes (الاسماءُ الحسنی)

The relationship with the Almighty Allah demands that His attributes must be remembered and articulated to develop an organic relationship with the Merciful and His servants. For the attribute Kareem you have realized the two way relationship, try to contemplate on the same line for the rest of His excellent attributes. This particular aspect of contemplation and developing bi-linear relationship forms the essence of what the Quran remind us time and again “fear Allah” (اتقوا اللہ).
